Lake Como

Lake Como Hen Weekend

Some hen weekends are all about the dancefloor. This one is about stepping off a ferry with the wind in your hair, into a village where the houses are the colour of gelato and the mountains are doing something ridiculous with the light.

Lake Como has been Italy's showing-off spot for centuries and, honestly, it earns it. The lake is shaped like an upside down Y, with Bellagio sitting right where the two southern arms split, so you're never more than a short boat ride from somewhere new. Wander Varenna's waterfront in the morning, cross to Menaggio for a long lunch, then land in Bellagio for aperitivo as the sun slides behind the hills. The Navigazione Laghi ferries do all the hard work and crossings between those three towns take roughly fifteen minutes, which means your plan can stay gloriously loose.

What makes a hen weekend in Lake Como such a winner is the range. Go full glamour with a private boat, enormous sunglasses and a bottle of Franciacorta on ice. Go gentle with garden walks, slow lunches and a spa afternoon. Or do both, which is what most groups end up doing, because nobody has ever said no to a cocktail after a swim.

Why the bride will love it

It feels special without you having to try. No theming, no props, no elaborate scavenger hunt in the rain. You turn up, the scenery does the heavy lifting, and every single photo looks like it's been styled. Add gelato on the steps, boat hair, a decent playlist and her favourite people, and you've got the kind of weekend she'll still be talking about at the wedding.

Getting there without the faff

Milan Malpensa is your closest airport and the easiest to fly into from the UK. There's a direct shuttle bus that gets you into Como in around an hour, or you can take the Malpensa Express to Saronno and change for a train to Como Lago, which takes about an hour and a half all in. Bergamo and Linate work too if the flights suit your group better.

Once you're at the lake, ferries are your best friend. Varenna also has its own train station and sits just over an hour from Milano Centrale, which makes it a brilliant base if nobody fancies driving. And truly, nobody should: the lakeside roads are narrow, twisty and full of coaches, and parking is its own special kind of stress. Leave the hire car idea at home.

One thing worth knowing: evening ferry services thin out earlier than you'd expect, so if you're staying on one side of the lake and eating on the other, check the last boat before the second round arrives.

Where to base your bride tribe

Como is the biggest town and the most switched on after dark, with proper bars, late-night spots and the best transport links. It's also where you'll find the funicular up to Brunate and the silk shops the town built its name on.

Bellagio is the one on all the postcards. Steep cobbled staircases lined with boutiques, gorgeous lake views from almost everywhere, and a central position that makes ferry hopping effortless. Lovely, but it does get busy in high season.

Varenna is smaller, softer and very walkable, with pastel houses stacked above the water and a romantic waterfront promenade. Great for a calmer hen, and the train station is a huge plus.

Menaggio sits on the western shore with a relaxed, holiday feel, a lido for swimming and easy ferry links to everywhere else. A good middle ground for mixed groups.

Things to do on a Lake Como hen do

A boat day, obviously

This is the big one. Hire a classic wooden boat with a skipper for a few hours and let him show you the villages, the villas and the best swim spots. Bring a speaker, bring snacks, bring absolutely everything you need for the group photo that becomes the wedding slideshow finale.

Villa hopping

Villa del Balbianello, out on a wooded peninsula near Lenno, is the showstopper. Its terraced gardens have starred in Star Wars: Episode II and Casino Royale, and the view back across the water is unreal. It's looked after by FAI, Italy's national trust, so book online well in advance and check the opening days, as it isn't open every day and tickets sell out fast in summer. Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is the one for the flower fans, and Villa Monastero in Varenna has a botanical garden that runs right along the shore.

Aperitivo, properly

Around six o'clock the whole lake shifts gear. Find a terrace, order a spritz or a glass of Franciacorta, and watch the ferries come and go while the light turns golden. It's the simplest thing on this list and it might be the best.

A spa afternoon

Plenty of lakeside hotels open their spa facilities to non-residents, so you can book the group in for a few hours of steam rooms and infinity pools with a mountain backdrop. Ideal for the morning after, or for hens who'd rather be horizontal than on a boat.

Get up high

Take the funicular from Como up to Brunate for a view over the whole southern arm of the lake. Go late in the day, take a bottle of something, and watch the sun go down over the rooftops.

Learn something delicious

Pasta-making classes and wine tastings are easy to arrange and work brilliantly for bigger groups, because everyone gets to talk to everyone. You also end up with lunch, which is more than most hen activities can promise.

Add a Milan day

Como San Giovanni to Milano Centrale takes around forty minutes on a fast train, so a shopping day in the city is very doable. Duomo, Galleria, negronis, home in time for dinner by the water.

Where to eat and drink

Lake food is its own thing here, so don't spend the whole weekend on pizza. Look for risotto with lake perch, and slow-cooked polenta dishes that come loaded with butter and cheese, especially in the villages away from the main squares. Book dinner ahead in Bellagio and Varenna in summer, because the good terraces go fast and a group of twelve turning up hopeful at eight o'clock will be eating at ten.

For late nights, Como town is your best bet. The bars around Piazza Volta and the lakefront keep going long after the smaller villages have called it a night.

When to go

May, June and September are the sweet spot: warm days, swimmable water and slightly fewer crowds. July and August are hot, buzzy and busy, so expect queues at the ferry docks and book everything early. April and October are quieter and beautiful, though some lidos and boat services run reduced timetables, and lake weather can be moody.

Lake Como hen weekend FAQs

How many nights do we need? Three nights is the sweet spot, giving you two full days for a boat day and a villa or spa day without anyone feeling rushed. Two nights works if you fly early and keep the plan simple.

Is Lake Como only good for chilled hens? Not at all. Base yourselves in Como town and you get proper bars and late nights alongside the scenery. The lake just gives you the option to have a glamorous day and a big night, rather than choosing one.

Do we need to hire a car? No, and we'd genuinely recommend against it. Ferries, trains and local buses cover everything you'll want to see, and the lakeside roads are stressful to drive and worse to park on.

Will it work for a big group? Yes, with a bit of forward planning. Boat hire, cooking classes and spa sessions all take groups happily, but restaurants and ferries need booking ahead, particularly in July and August.

What should we pack? Swimwear, sunglasses and something floaty for aperitivo hour, plus flat shoes you can actually walk in. Bellagio and Varenna are built on staircases, and heels on cobbles is a game nobody wins. A light layer for evenings on the water is worth squeezing in too.

Can we swim in the lake? You can, and it's wonderful. Head to a lido or swim from the boat during your day out. The water is properly cold in early season and much friendlier from June onwards.

Is it easy to get around at night? Within each town, yes, everything is walkable. Between towns is trickier once the last ferries have gone, so either stay where you're partying or agree on taxis before the evening gets away from you.
